## Introduction
PE firms are adept at painting an attractive picture during the sale process: professional resources, operational expertise and accelerated growth. They rarely discuss the day‑to‑day reality of running a PE portfolio company. The pressure is intense—deliver aggressive growth while cutting costs, hit the numbers each quarter and navigate board meetings that feel more like final exams.

## Hidden Challenges
The loneliness can be overwhelming. Research summarised by CEO Coaching International and Harvard Business Review shows that around **half of CEOs feel lonely** and **61 % say this isolation hinders their performance** (CEO Coaching International summary of Harvard Business Review research). At the same time, data from private‑equity leadership surveys reveal that about **58 %** of CEOs in PE‑backed companies are replaced within two years of investment (Cowen Partners). Investors themselves acknowledge the problem: a recent survey found that **63 %** of private‑equity investors rank human capital and leadership talent as their top concern (NorthWind Partners human-capital report). Despite these findings, many portfolio‑company CEOs lack the support structures—coaching, peer networks and operating partners—that would help them thrive.

## How Founders Can Prepare
Founders considering a sale can prepare for this reality by:

* **Interviewing buyers about their support model:** ask whether they provide operating partners, leadership coaches or advisory boards to help CEOs succeed.
* **Negotiating decision rights:** preserve meaningful influence over strategy, capital allocation and executive hiring so you’re not merely an executor.
* **Building a support network:** establish mentors and peer CEOs who understand the pressure of running a PE‑backed business.
* **Exploring alternative exit structures:** if full PE ownership isn’t the right fit, consider strategic buyers or minority investments.

## Conclusion
Knowledge is power. The more you understand what life will look like after the sale, the better positioned you are to thrive—or to choose a different path altogether.
